China’s manufacturing sector is accelerating its transformation into “Made in China 2.0,” with private enterprises inherently poised to pioneer markets and drive innovation. How has Kunchai Technology, over nearly three decades, evolved from following industry trends to assuming a position of comprehensive leadership? What unique insights does this entrepreneur, who hails from Pingyang, Wenzhou, bring to the table when it comes to innovation? Recently, the program “Wenzhou Business Lounge” conducted an interview with Xie Bingkun in Fujian.


Disrupting the Traditional: From “Bottleneck” to Global Leadership


In the showroom of Fujian Kuncai Material Technology Co., Ltd., cars, ships, and aircraft models are neatly parked. It turns out that the luster on the surfaces of these materials is all attributable to pearlescent pigments. Pearlescent pigments are produced by coating one or more layers of metal oxides onto the surface of a substrate—whether natural mica or synthetically produced materials such as synthetic mica, glass, or aluminum oxide—through a specific manufacturing process. These pigments have a wide range of downstream applications and can be categorized, based on their intended use, into industrial-grade, automotive-grade, and cosmetic-grade varieties.

In 1998, Xie Bingkun came into contact with pearlescent pigments by chance. In 1999, he established a production and processing plant for pearlescent materials in his hometown, Pingyang County, Wenzhou City. Over time, the company grew steadily, and in 2005 it relocated to Fuqing, Fujian. “Currently, Kunchai Technology’s state-of-the-art pearlescent‑material production line boasts an annual capacity of 30,000 tons of pearlescent pigments and 10,000 tons of synthetic mica, making it the largest such facility among global pearlescent pigment manufacturers.”

Another world‑first achievement of Kunchai is equally a source of pride: it is the only company globally to have industrialized the production of next‑generation titanium dioxide and iron oxide via the extraction process, while holding full intellectual property rights and the nation’s first set of process certifications. “For more than 70 years, the global titanium dioxide industry has relied on the sulfuric acid and chloride processes,” Xie Bingkun stated plainly. He added that these conventional methods are costly and struggle to meet modern market demands for high quality, low carbon emissions, and environmental sustainability.

Faced with this predicament, Kunchai Technology chose the most challenging path—indigenous R&D. After 13 years of relentless technological breakthroughs, the company successfully industrialized the world’s first titanium dioxide production process based on hydrochloric acid extraction, transforming China from a technology‑importing nation into an exporter.

The value of this groundbreaking technology is reflected across three dimensions: enhanced quality, cost optimization, and environmental sustainability. Xie Bingkun illustrated with an example: “In the past, low‑end textiles relied on the sulfuric acid process for titanium dioxide, which often caused fabrics to yellow; by contrast, products made via the extraction process not only maintain their color longer but also cut energy consumption by more than 30%.” Today, Kunchai Technology holds nearly 20 PCT international patents and dozens of domestic patents, establishing a robust technological moat. Notably, its pearlescent pigment market share has remained No. 1 worldwide for over a decade, with products serving sectors including automotive, construction materials, and consumer goods.

Kuncai continues to extend its industrial chain. Currently, the company also possesses the world’s highest-grade magnetite–vanadium–titanium ore, with total reserves exceeding 10 billion tonnes: containing 56% iron, 14% titanium, 1.5% vanadium, and trace amounts of other elements. As a result, Kuncai has established the most comprehensive industrial chain in the sector, developed the world’s first proprietary process technology, and secured strategic partnerships with leading companies across various industries, giving it core competitiveness in technology, supply chain integration, and market access.


The Code of Innovation: The Resonance Between R&D Investment and the Wenzhou Entrepreneurial Spirit


“Innovation is not the icing on the cake; it is systematic disruption,” defines Xie Bingkun, articulating Kuncai’s innovation philosophy. From pearlescent pigments to titanium dioxide and now to a full‑chain industrial layout, the company has consistently adopted a “start from zero and leap forward” mindset to break free from conventional technological frameworks. For instance, on the equipment side, Kuncai’s self‑developed machinery boasts precision far surpassing that of its peers; on the process side, it leverages big‑data models to optimize parameters, swiftly translating laboratory breakthroughs into productive capacity. This kind of “from 0 to 1” breakthrough has enabled Kuncai to become a rule‑setter in its industry.

“R&D investment is not a cost—it’s an investment in future production,” revealed Xie Bingkun. Kuncai has already invested more than RMB 5 billion in technological R&D and plans to inject an additional tens of billions in the years ahead. This figure far exceeds the industry average, but in his view, “the harder the technology, the higher its value.” The company allocates over 90% of its resources to innovation, even treating its factory construction as a “scaled-up laboratory.”

Underpinning this boldness is the “dare to lead” spirit deeply ingrained in the very DNA of Wenzhou’s people. Born in Pingyang, Wenzhou, Xie Bingkun has long understood the survival maxim: “Only by striving can one prevail.” “In the 1980s, Wenzhou began with imitation; today, we are driven by innovation,” he says candidly. The success of Wenzhou entrepreneurs, he argues, lies not in avoiding risk, but in taking calculated risks with utmost caution—walking on thin ice. This ethos, when applied at Kuncan, translates into a relentless pursuit of technological frontiers: over 13 years, the company cracked the challenge of industrializing extraction technology, and for three decades it has remained steadfastly focused on the titanium sector, undeterred even by mounting pressures related to funding and talent.

“Innovation requires persistent, incremental improvement—there are no shortcuts.” Xie Bingkun sums up the R&D team’s management approach as “closely tracking the market and allocating resources scientifically.” He not only steers the technological direction but also prioritizes the precise deployment of resources. “The true value of R&D lies in translating results into real-world applications, not in the sheer number of publications.” This pragmatic philosophy ensures that every investment made by Kunchai is converted into tangible market competitiveness.
R&D is given high priority, as evidenced by Xie Bingkun’s professional credentials. In addition to his role as chairman, he holds the titles of professor‑level senior engineer, recipient of the State Council Special Allowance, and a Class A high‑level talent in Fujian Province.


The Underlying Tone of Responsibility: From Business Success to Social Value


In Xie Bingkun’s vision, the company’s ultimate goal is not merely commercial success, but the creation of sustainable social value. Kuncai Technology publishes an annual Sustainability White Paper, establishing a comprehensive corporate social responsibility framework that spans low‑carbon production, employee well‑being, and supply‑chain accountability. For instance, its extraction‑based manufacturing process reduces carbon emissions by 40% and enables the recycling of wastewater; moreover, through industry‑university‑research collaborations, the company has trained thousands of technical professionals for the sector.

As a representative of Wenzhou entrepreneurs abroad, Xie Bingkun harbors deep affection for his hometown. “Giving back to our hometown is the shared aspiration of all Wenzhou businesspeople,” he says. He actively participates in Zhejiang’s efforts to build a demonstration zone for high-quality development and common prosperity, promoting industrial support and technology sharing. “The sound of our native dialect will never change; ensuring that the people of our hometown lead happier lives is our responsibility.”

Faced with emerging trends such as artificial intelligence and the low‑altitude economy, Xie Bingkun has demonstrated keen insight. “AI will fundamentally transform R&D efficiency.” Kuncai Technology has already adopted big‑data models, leveraging intelligent algorithms to shorten experimental cycles; at the same time, the company is targeting the coatings market for low‑altitude aircraft, offering customized color solutions for drones and electric airplanes. “The future society will undoubtedly be vibrant, and what Kuncai aims to do is imbue every hue with technological substance.”

Speaking about the company’s long-term vision, Xie Bingkun said, “Kuncai hopes to leave behind not just the name of a single enterprise, but rather an industry benchmark and a spirit of innovation.” In his view, China’s private enterprises are now at a critical juncture for technological advancement; only by anchoring themselves in innovation can they navigate global competition with stability and sustainability.

From a small township enterprise to a global industry giant, the growth story of Kunchai Technology is a microcosm of how Chinese private companies break through through innovation. Over 30 years, Xie Bingkun has demonstrated that true leaders never chase fleeting trends—they create them.
