From June 18 to 22, the 21st China–Strait Innovation Project Achievement Fair (hereinafter referred to as the “Strait Innovation Fair”) was successfully held in Fuzhou. This year’s fair was dedicated to leveraging technological innovation to drive high-quality development, successfully facilitating the matchmaking of 521 projects with a total value exceeding RMB 400 billion. Among the exhibitors was Fujian Kuncai Material Technology Co., Ltd. (stock code: 603826; stock abbreviation: Kuncai Technology), representing local enterprises. The company’s cutting-edge industry achievement—the world’s first titanium dioxide production process using extraction—was one of the major highlights of this year’s event.
According to the official website of the Hainan Innovation Conference, the innovative achievement “the world’s first titanium dioxide production process based on extraction” is listed as “ready for industrialization,” with cooperation options including “technology equity participation and other arrangements.” At the conference’s physical exhibition hall, Kunchai Technology showcased a strikingly white model of the “Fujian” aircraft carrier, pairing titanium dioxide‑based coatings with this highly anticipated vessel to give visitors a clear, hands‑on sense of the application scenarios and finished‑product characteristics of high‑end titanium dioxide and iron oxide.
It is understood that titanium dioxide, one of the world’s highest‑performing white pigments, once saw its advanced chloride‑process production technologies and related expertise monopolized by foreign firms. To break through these critical technological barriers, Kunchai Technology spent 13 years of intensive research and development, investing over RMB 3 billion, to pioneer a globally unique extraction‑based chloride‑process for producing titanium dioxide. This breakthrough overturned more than a century of conventional manufacturing routes in the industry, earning the company the first-ever process‑technology certification and securing more than ten domestic and international invention patents. By overcoming foreign restrictions and monopolies on high‑end chloride‑process titanium dioxide technology, Kunchai has contributed to the sector’s high‑quality, green, and sustainable development, garnering strong recognition from national ministries such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Moving forward, the company will continue to optimize its sustainable industrial‑chain structure, fostering an enabling ecosystem for cutting‑edge innovation in the titanium dioxide field, bolstering its core competitiveness, and supporting China’s transformation and upgrading in this key industry.
To meet the financing needs for the large-scale industrialization of this disruptive technology, the company is currently planning a non‑public issuance of shares. In discussions with multiple investment institutions, the company stated that its first production line, with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons, has reached full production and is operating normally. The second production line is expected to be commissioned around July, and by October, three additional lines are scheduled to come online and become operational. Currently, these three lines have completed approximately 60% of their installation work, with all five lines projected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter. The company plans to build five more production lines in 2024, and by 2025, ten lines will be in operation, achieving an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of titanium dioxide chloride and 1 million tons of iron oxide.
As a leading enterprise in the inorganic pigment industry, Kunchai Technology showcased its globally market‑leading pearlescent pigment products at the China International Fair for Investment and Trade, in addition to its high‑end titanium dioxide. The company currently boasts an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons of pearlescent pigments and 10,000 tons of synthetic mica, with applications spanning coatings, plastics, automotive, papermaking, cosmetics (personal care), inks, ceramics, building materials, food, textiles, photovoltaics, new energy, and environmental protection sectors.
