Kuncai Technology’s first 100,000-ton-per-year titanium dioxide chloride production line has commenced trial operations.

On December 12, Kuncai Technology commenced trial production of its first production line, with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons of titanium dioxide via the chloride process and 100,000 tons of iron oxide. This line represents a project that Kuncai Technology has developed entirely with independent intellectual property rights and is the world’s first to achieve process certification, fundamentally transforming conventional sulfuric acid‑ and chloride‑based manufacturing methods. It delivers significant improvements and fundamental advances in energy consumption, safety, environmental protection, production conditions, and product quality. After more than a decade of research, development, and pilot-scale testing, the project has demonstrated that all product performance indicators meet or exceed international industry standards.

This line represents a project entirely developed with Kuncai’s proprietary intellectual property and the world’s first process to receive full-scale certification, poised to fundamentally transform conventional sulfuric‑acid and chloride‑process manufacturing methods. It delivers significant improvements and breakthrough advances in energy consumption, safety, environmental protection, production conditions, and product quality. After more than a decade of research, development, and pilot‑scale testing, the project has achieved product performance metrics that meet or exceed international industry standards.

Kuncai Technology’s Jiangyin Industrial Park is a key component of the Jiangyin Chemical New Materials Special Zone, covering an area of 1,158 mu. The overall plan calls for an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of titanium dioxide chloride, 500,000 tons of iron oxides, and functional titanium dioxide, making it China’s largest integrated enterprise specializing in the R&D, production, and sales of high-end titanium dioxide chloride and iron oxides. A second production line, with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons of titanium dioxide chloride and 100,000 tons of iron oxides, is expected to come on stream after next year’s Spring Festival, with full capacity projected to be reached by 2022.


Titanium dioxide produced via the chloride process is a key project that multiple national ministries and commissions have prioritized for investment, encouraging both domestic and foreign‑invested enterprises. In the 1970s, China introduced the first‑generation sulfuric acid‑based titanium dioxide production technology from abroad; nearly five decades later, it has also adopted the second‑generation chloride‑process technology for producing rutile‑type titanium dioxide for more than a decade. Nevertheless, critical product technologies still lag significantly behind international standards, leaving applications in the mid‑ to high‑end segments heavily reliant on imports. The third‑generation extractive chloride process for producing titanium dioxide, now being realized at Kunchai Technology, marks another bold step forward—transforming China’s manufacturing base into a hub of innovation. This breakthrough addresses a bottleneck that global industry players have long sought to overcome but been unable to solve, driving high‑quality development and industrial upgrading, and delivering a revolutionary, historic contribution to the worldwide sector.
